Johnathan Mccarthy loved things with engines like tractors, combines and trucks.

He was also fond of music, especially “You are my Sunshine.”

“If it had a steering wheel, he wanted to drive it,” his family remembered in his obituary. “He brought much love and laughter to his family and everyone he met, a real social butterfly.”

Johnathan “Jonny” Earl Mccarthy died Monday while riding an off-road vehicle at his home northeast of Edmore.

He was 8 years old. “Jonny was smart and had a special ability to remember things, like how to put his bike back together after he had torn it apart,” his family said.

A third grader at Montabella Elementary School, Jonny also loved nature, walks, hunting and fishing and wanted to one day serve in the U.S. Military.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday at Brigham Funeral Chapel in Edmore. The family will greet friends Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. at the funeral chapel.

State troopers were sent to the scene of the accident in the 11000 block of Deja Road Monday afternoon.

“Preliminary investigation revealed the ORV was being operated by an 8-year-old male driver on private property when the ORV overturned,”

they said. “The male driver suffered fatal injuries as a result of this crash.”

Jonny is survived by his mom and dad, Michael and Kristine (Newman) Mccarthy; twin brother, Danial “Danny;” sister, Robin (Randall Judge) Wonsey of Shepherd, brother, Sean (Kristen) Marsh of Florida; bonus brother, Brandon Nedry; grandparents, Charlene and Ken Hubbell, Roger Mccarthy, James Sr. and Candice Newman, among others.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make donations are asked to consider the needs of the family.
