An ambulance transporting a patient from one facility to another came upon a fiery crash that had just happened in Gratiot County Tuesday evening and an EMT pulled the driver from the blaze.

A driver ran a stop sign and hit another vehicle at the corner of Barry and Lincoln roads, southeast of Breckenridge, about 7:30 p.m., Gratiot Undersheriff Steve Sopocy said.

Mobile Medical Response on Wednesday gave credit to its emergency medical technicians Keith Hunt and Chloe Allen who came across the crash almost as it happened.

“A man was trapped in an overturned pickup truck that was on fire and could not free himself,” the agency said. “Keith extricated the trapped man from the burning wreckage by himself. The driver ended up with fairly minor injuries, but if it weren’t for Keith he most certainly would have died in the fire.”

Sopocay said the driver at fault claimed she didn’t see the stop sign because the sun was in her eyes.

Besides saving the man, the MMR crew put out the fire after breaking the back window to pull the driver out.

One driver was taken to Midmichigan Medical Center - Gratiot and the other to Midmichigan Medical Center in Midland. Neither had life threatening injuries.

Breckenridge-wheeler fire and rescue assisted at the scene.

“Thank you, Keith and Chloe for your swift action in this devastating situation,” MMR said on social media. “Talk about being in the right place at the right time.”
