After closing school due to a threat made by a male 15-year-old student, Farwell Area Schools administration and law enforcement from Clare County are working to further maneuver through the situation.

FAS contacted the Clare County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday, May 26, at 3:10 p.m., regarding a safety concern and alleged threat made against a FAS staff member by one of the students. Deputies met with school administration and talked with the student involved as well as his parents.

The school also closed school on Friday, May 27, while the investigation continued and a report was also forwarded to the Clare County Prosecutor’s Office for review.

The student is not allowed on campus for the remainder of the 2021-2022 school year.

“We will continue to work with the proper authorities to get this student the help that they need, while we strive to ensure the safety of all students and staff,” a letter from FAS Superintendent Steve Scoville said. “Especially with the the tragedy in Uvalde, Texas, and other school violence events heavy on our hearts and minds, we understand that sending students to school can be a source of anxiety. School should be a place of learning, exploration, expression, and creativity.”

FAS resumed school on Tuesday, May 31, as officials feel the threat has been addressed.

“We will continue to practice school safety measures, including heightened awareness of our access to the buildings and transportation, and will not hesitate to do whatever it takes to protect our students and staff,” the letter said.
