O’BRIEN, ROSE MARIE (SOWER)

-

Rose O’brien, 92, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away Saturday, February 18, 2023, at the home of her daughter Debbie, after a 3-year battle with dementia. Rose was born October 25, 1930, in Belding, Michigan, daughter of the late David and Lottie (Thompson) Sower. She married Lawrence “Mike” O’brien on May 6, 1950, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Mt. Pleasant where she remained a lifelong parishioner. Mike and Rose moved to Mike’s family farm where the city girl learned what life was going to be like, being the wife of a dairy farmer on 350 acres. Rose assisted Mike with the daily chores. She learned to milk cows, drive a tractor, and raise chickens, even selling eggs to town folks. In 1965 Rose hung up her overalls and began working for Central Michigan University where she ascended from cook to unit manager in food services. During her 27 years of service, Rose worked with hundreds of wonderful staff members and students. Rose loved spending time with family and friends. She packed the car every weekend with delicious food and her loving grandkids, heading to her place at Cedar Shores in Harrison for modern camping. In addition to her love of cooking, Rose enjoyed shopping, visits to the Soaring Eagle Casino, and hosting big dinners for family and friends. She was an amazing cook, and everyone loved her cookies. Over the years Mike and Rose hosted many family reunions, cookouts, and hayrides. Rose is survived by her three children, Debbie (Bruce) Hubble, Sharon (Rob) Haggart, and Pat (Jill) O’brien, all of Mt. Pleasant; special nephew, Marty (Brenda) O’brien of Mt. Pleasant; six grandchildren, Aaron (Tracie) Hubble of Alma, Todd (Abby) Haggart of Coleman, Ann (John) Pasquinzo of Macomb, Eric (Jessica) Haggart of Coleman, Kevin O’brien of Shepherd, and Hunter O’brien of Houston, TX; seven great grandchildren, Lillian and Claire Hubble, Chase and Etta Haggart, Blake and Gavin Pasquinzo, and Henry Haggart; in-laws, Theresa Gross, Renee O’brien, Barbara Ley, Pat and Kay O’brien, John O’brien, and Sue Soto; and numerous nieces and nephews.
