Construction workforce shortage tops half a million: What can be done?
The construction industry must attract more than a half million workers in 2023 to build the places where we live, work, play, worship, learn and heal, according to the latest analysis from the Associated Builders and Contractors.
As the demand for construction services remains high, filling these roles is vital to America’s economy and infrastructure rebuilding initiatives. It’s important here in Michigan, too.
So, what steps are we taking to address the workforce shortage?
ABC works to recruit, educate and upskill the construction workforce through a national network of more than 800 apprenticeship, craft, safety and management education programs — including more than 300 government-registered apprenticeship programs across 20 different construction occupations — to build the people who build America.
Barriers to becoming a craft professional are minimal, whether you are a student, changing careers or rejoining the workforce. ABC member contractors use flexible, competency-based and market-driven education methodologies to build a construction workforce that is safe, skilled and productive. In fact, ABC members invested $1.6 billion in 2021 to educate 1.3 million course attendees.
Right here in Michigan, our Association operates three different education and training academies in different parts of the state — the Greater Michigan Construction Academy in Midland, the West Michigan Construction Academy in Grand Rapids, and Southeast Michigan Construction Academy in Madison Heights.
