‘As You Are’
Downstate Tiktok influencer credits Friendship Circle for helping her thrive, despite health challenges
Area residents can put their feet to good use on Sunday, August 27 by participating in Friendship Circle of Michigan’s Walk4friendship.
The annual family walk raises crucial funds and community awareness for Friendship Circle and its efforts to assist individuals with disabilities. Walk registration opens at 10:30 a.m. and the walk begins at 11:45 a.m.
Out front and center will be Shayla
Mostyn, a 17-year veteran of the walk and Tiktok influencer who says Friendship Circle programs positively changed her life. Now a sophomore in the Honors College at Eastern Michigan University, majoring in sociology with a minor in journalism, Mostyn became involved with Friendship Circle as a child.
“My parents were looking for an opportunity to join a community that would welcome me with open arms, but also help me learn to navigate life. With that in mind, we found Friendship Circle,” the 19-yearold Wixom resident said.
Mostyn has been diagnosed with cerebral palsy, scoliosis, and arthrogryposis, a variety of non-progressive conditions that are characterized by multiple joint stiffness and muscle weakness found throughout the body at birth.
But she doesn’t let the multiple diagnoses slow her down.
“Over the years I have participated in many Friendship Circle programs including ballet, basketball, and day camp. And then when I was old enough, I became a volunteer and mentor to help other kids and adults through the program,” Mostyn said. “Friendship Circle has helped me learn to walk, learn to ride a bike, and really just help me to survive without worry
