Borodychuk throws for 4 TDS, leads Oilers to victory

On Friday night from Community Memorial Stadium the Mt. Pleasant football team opened the 2023 home docket with a nonconfere­nce contest versus Canadian powerhouse St. Thomas More.

The Oilers were good from the get-go too as they pulled away late en route to a 42-14 victory over the Knights. With the win Mt. Pleasant improves to 2-1 on the season heading into Friday’s conference game against Traverse City Central from Thirlby Field.

Mt. Pleasant quarterbac­k Logan Borodychuk turned in a stellar showing as he completed 16of-20 passes for 193 yards and four touchdowns versus no intercepti­ons.

He hit Marcus Castellon with an 8-yard TD pass; Easton Day with a 31-yard TD pass; Jaxon Dern with a 20-yard TD pass and Brogan Parks with a 14-yard TD pass.

Running back Caleb Neubecker added in a 1-yard TD run while Kayden Ivey had a 7-yard touchdown run.

Carter Dole also had a 54yard reception for the Oilers in

the win.

The 2023 Mt. Pleasant Hall of Fame Class was also introduced at halftime and honored at the induction ceremony at Mt. Pleasant High School on Saturday morning.

On Friday night the Pioneers

put together a third-straight strong showing as they routed host Beaverton 49-0 in Jack Pine Conference action.

The Pioneers improve to 2-1 overall and to 2-0 in conference via the victory. In the last two weeks alone Clare has outscored its two opponents 99-7 after opening the season with a tough-fought 29-26 loss to unbeaten Freeland.

Quarterbac­k Jayden Arthur opened the scoring in the first when he hit Ryan Louch with an 11-yard TD pass to make it 7-0.

On the third play of the second quarter he hit Jacob Halicek with a 9-yard TD to make it 14-0. From there the Pioneers posted 21 additional points in the frame to claim a 35-0 halftime lead.

Westyn Bryant had an 8-yard TD run while Arthur hit Louch with a 12-yard TD pass. Richie Montgomery closed the first half scoring out with a 33-yard fumble return for score.

In the second half Aiden Van bonn had a 1-yard TD run while Louch added in a 28-yard TD scamper.

Arthur completed 6-for-12 passes for 58 yards and two scores versus one intercepti­on. He also ran for 78 yards on nine carries while Bryant had 55 yards on eight totes.

For the game the Pioneers compiled 322 yards while allowing only 96. The Pioneers host defending conference champion and defending state champion Gladwin on Friday.
