Late field goal lifts Birch Run over Alma; Harrison falls in Pinconning

Birch Run put together the final run and won on Friday night.

As it was the Panthers from Birch Run bested the Panthers from Alma Friday from Don Miller Field, using a 29-yard field goal from Noah Mudge to squeak out a 23-21 victory.

Alma falls to 1-2 overall via the loss while Birch Run stays perfect at 3-0.

Mudge connected on the game-winning field goal with 2:01 left in regulation. Alma drove down to the Birch Run 39 before Mudge sealed it by intercepti­ng Jacoby Dunlap’s pass with 51 seconds left.

Alma led on three occasions Friday as it took a 7-0 lead one minute into the second quarter via a Dunlap 3-yard TD run. Birch Run answered six minutes later as Chase Nostrandt scored from a yard out

Alma came out of the halftime break and retook the lead at 14-7 when Dunlap hit Alex Reyes with a 35-yard TD pass. Birch Run quarterbac­k David Lopez hit Darrin Cummings with a 4-yard TD pass with 5:53 left in the third to tie it at 14 before Birch Run took its first lead at 20-14 in the fourth. Lopez hit Gage Martinus with an 8-yard TD pass.

Alma answered though as Dunlap scampered in from 7-yards out to tie it at 20-20. Cooper Couch, who went 3-for-3 in PATS, gave the host the lead at 21-20 with the point after.

Dunlap completed 12-of-26 passes for 182 yards and one score versus two intercepti­ons. Cole O’boyle had 40 yards rushing on 12 carries while Cade Sutherland had 101 yards receiving on eight catches.

Lopez completed 14-of-24 passes for 157 yards and two scores for Birch Run while Nostrandt ran for 104 yards on 22 carries.

PINCONNING 23, HARRISON 16

PINCONNING >> The Harrison High School football team dropped its Jack Pine Conference road game at Pinconning Frida6, falling by a final of 23-16.

The Hornets fall to 1-2 overall and to 0-2 in conference while Pinconning improves to 1-2 overall and to 1-1 in conference.

Wayne Bhear and Logan Williams led the Hornets on the ground as Bhear ran for 72 yards and a score while Williams had 43 yards and a score.

Harrison was outgained 206-139 in the game.

Quin Elgie led the D with 11 tackles.
