Alma, SHA at home for regionals
Districts done, regionals ready. On Monday evening four mid-michigan girls basketball programs will compete in the regional round in Alma, Breckenridge, Clare and Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart Academy.
All four won district titles on Friday night and now will look to advance in the MHSAA state tournament and make a run at winning a state championship.
Locally, both Alma and Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart Academy are hosting regionals this week, thus if you’re looking for some top-tier hoops action look no further.
Here’s a quick look at who’s who and where’s where.
Division 2 — at Alma High School
The host Panthers won their first district since 2016 on Friday as they defeated Belding 44-25 at Central Montcalm High School.
Alma (19-5) also tied the school record for single-season wins and will host Flint Powers (21-3) at 5:30 p.m. Monday. Frankenmuth (22-2) will take on Freeland (213) in Monday’s second regional semifinal at 7 p.m.
On paper this is a super-tough regional that features some of the best D2 teams in the state as Frankenmuth is ranked sixth and Freeland seventh. Flint Powers was also receiving votes in the last AP top-10 poll.
Alma will play on its home court and has a legitimate chance of advancing as the Panthers are 11-2 at home this season. Flint Powers defeated Flint Hamady 49-35 Friday at Durand High School. Both teams bring in fivegame winning streaks.
Division 2 at Big Rapids High School
Clare won its first district title in a decade Friday, besting Shepherd 43-31 for the crown at Standish-sterling High School.
The Pioneers (19-5) will face Ludington (18-7) at 7 p.m. Monday in Big Rapids with the winner advancing to Wednesday’s regional
