Jamaica, one of the Caribbean’s best-known islands, enjoys a rich multicultural history. The island boasts several popular port destinations, including Ocho Rios.
Ocho Rios means “eight rivers” in Spanish, but the name is misleading. The title was actually a corruption of the Spanish las chorreras, which means “the waterfalls.”
Ocho Rios is also notable for hosting some famous literary residents. It was the home of Ian Fleming, the author of the James Bond novels, and playwright Sir
Noël Coward. You can visit &RZDUG¶V KRPH )LUHÀ\ ZKLFK LV SHUFKHG RQ D FOL̆ miles east of Ocho Rios.
Ocho Rios is the place to enjoy a bamboo raft ride down the Martha Brae River. You’ll also want to visit the iconic Dunn’s River Falls near Ocho
Rios. The 600-foot-high waterfall cascades down terraced limestone beds and eventually ends in the Caribbean Sea.
Dunn’s River Falls is one of the most-photographed sights in Jamaica. If you are adventurous or athletic, you can climb to the top of the falls on a trail that zigzags around the tumbling water. The trail is open every day, and guides are available.
Feel free to splash around in the waters at the base of the falls, relax in the cooler pools higher up or simply lounge on the small beach nearby.
