Healthwatch NEW PILL A DAY KEEPS FAT AWAY!
WEIGHT loss may one day be revolutionized by a new wonder pill, which seems to allow people to pig out — and not pack on pounds!
Scientists at the University of Texas Health Science Center say their experimental medication CPACC prevented weight gain in rodents fed a high-sugar, high-fat diet and also warded off the negative physiological consequences associated with overindulging in unhealthy foods!
“When we give this drug to mice for a short time, they start losing weight,” says
Dr. Madesh Muniswamy, who led the research.
CPACC works by encouraging the body to break down sugar and fat more efficiently. Researchers formulated the drug after discovering too much magnesium within cells puts the brakes on metabolism! Deleting MRS2 — the protein-coding gene that controls the flow of magnesium — resulted in more efficient metabolism of sugar and fat in mice models. The animal test subjects also showed no evidence of fatty liver disease, a condition related to poor diet, obesity and type 2 diabetes.
CPACC is a small-molecule drug that mimics the gene alteration by restricting magnesium and thereby improving metabolism. Mice given the medication stayed skinny — despite 20 weeks of gorging on high-calorie food — while critters in the placebo group ate the same diet and grew progressively more plump! The CPACC rodents also
displayed lower cholesterol and blood sugar levels, indicating the treatment combats the harmful effects of an unhealthy diet.
“A drug that can reduce the risk of cardiometabolic diseases, such as heart attack and stroke, and also the incidence of liver cancer, which can follow fatty liver disease, will make a huge impact,” says Muniswamy. More than 42 percent of
American adults are obese, while another 31 percent are overweight.
The University of Texas team plans to launch clinical trials of CPACC with human volunteers in as soon as two months.
Muniswamy’s colleague Travis Madaris predicts the medication could be “gamechanging” for those who struggle to shed excess flab. CPACC is the latest antiobesity breakthrough after the FDA-approved type 2 diabetes injectables semaglutide and tirzepatide were also found to slash weight.
