BREAST CANCER WARNINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
ALUMP is not the only telltale sign of breast cancer! There are several other important symptoms that can lead to an early, lifesaving diagnosis. But an
Ohio State University survey of 1,000 adults — including men — found fewer than half of those polled were aware of them!
“Screening mammography is our number one defense in detecting breast cancers at their earliest, most treatable stages,” says OSU professor Dr. Ashley Pariser. “But breast cancer can present in a number of ways.” When the condition — the second-leading cancer-killer of women — is found with a lump detectable to touch, that can indicate a fast-growing tumor or advanced stage disease, physicians say.
That’s why it’s vital for gals — and guys — to be familiar with the look and feel of their breast tissue and selfexamine every month, so any changes can be promptly investigated.
People should also remember breast tissue isn’t just found in boobs — it reaches up to the collarbone and under the armpits. Experts say these red flags should be evaluated by a medical professional
■ A swelling, lump or area of thickened tissue that’s often hard and painless and doesn’t move easily.
■ Changes in the skin. Puckering or dimpling like orange peel has been associated with rare but aggressive inflammatory breast cancer.
■ A red or inflamedlooking breast.
■ Pain that persists.
■ Loss of feeling in any part of the breast.
■ Nipple abnormalities like rashes or crusting, unusual discharge and any change in position. If a nipple is being pulled or points in a different direction, it could indicate the presence of cancer.
Approximately 300,000 Americans were diagnosed with the potentially fatal disease in 2023 — including 2,800 men, according to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
Pariser says, “We want people to feel empowered about their bodies and know what is normal for them, so subtle changes can be evaluated quickly to give us the best chance at early detection.”
