Preston Singletary’s contemporary blown glass interpretations of Tlingit berry baskets allow us to view these utilitarian forms from a new perspective. His use of color and the translucent quality inherent in glass give these works additional visual appeal and perhaps even solicit a new viewing audience due to the far-reaching appeal of glass. Singletary incorporates abstracted geometric designs that reference elements in nature and animals forms that may or may not be associated with his clan/crest symbols. The Tlingit Curio Shelf that he has become known for creating features a curated assortment of five baskets of varying shapes and sizes displayed on a custom wall-mounted shelf designed by the artist to ensure optimal display.
