CARA ROMERO (CHEMEHUEVI INDIAN TRIBE)
Cara Romero’s award-winning photograph Ty, of Diné woman Ty Harris, incoporates cultural references important to Harris as well as the symbolic white olivella shells. The shells “represent the inter-tribal relationship between Indigenous women from the California Coast where the shells originate and Diné women who celebrate white shells through their stories,” explains Romero. “We wanted to show how our ancient trade routes connected each other then and now.”
