Native American Art

Welcome

-

Welcome to our April/may issue, which includes our secondever special section completely devoted to Native textiles. When we envisioned this section, as well as all of the others, what we were thinking is this: what articles can we include which will contribute to the education needed for people interested in collecting in this field? Then, once we determine this, we work with established writers who know what they are talking about and who can write in a way that is educational, accessible, informative and insightful. And, in the best of worlds, we would like our articles to serve as a starting-off point for both new and established collectors. Then, once we’ve piqued their interest, they are able to do further research and reading on their own.

As an art magazine designed for collectors of both contemporary and history Native art, we also want to show people how they can also get involved in this particular art market. That is why we cover what is happening in the galleries, what is coming up for auction and what events will be taking place. And, we write our articles to serve as previews for these events. Take, for example, the article in this issue on the Museum of Indian Art and Culture’s annual Native Treasures show, happening over Memorial Day weekend in Santa Fe, New Mexico. When writing this, we spoke to the people running the exhibition and then we reached out to the actual artists who will be there throughout the weekend and asked them for images of their new work and quotes about this work as well. So, when collectors see the article, not only are they finding out about the event, but they are getting a glimpse into what work they will actually see while there. And not just the work but also what inspired the artists to create it.

Articles like this invite collectors, new and old, to be active and participate in the market. Ours is a magazine of action! It’s not just about reading about these things, it’s motivating people to get up and join, to begin collecting, to visit galleries, speak with dealers, go to art fairs, visit museums and anything else one may need to become an educated collector! This is the experience we want people to have when reading the magazine. And then, of course, write us and let us know how it was!

Sincerely,

Joshua Rose Editor
