4 charged in motorcycle theft
EAST HAVEN — Four men have been arrested in the theft of a motorcycle after being tracked down in a marsh early Wednesday.
With the assistance of K9 Arrow, the four 20yearold men were tracked and taken into custody.
David Carpio, Adrian Santiago and Tyler Souza, all of Stratford, and Kevin Despres, of Middletown, are charged with thirddegree larceny, conspiracy to commit thirddegree larceny, seconddegree criminal trespass and interfering with police.
Lt. Joseph M. Murgo said the incident began around 2 a.m. “after an alert citizen called police to report a group of suspicious individuals pushing a motorcycle up Meadow Street, with a Nissan Maxima following slowly behind them.”
Prior to officers’ arrival to Meadow Street, dispatch advised officers that the individuals last were seen abandoning the motorcycle on the side of the road before entering a Nissan Maxima, which headed north out of the area.
“Officers flooded the area and located a Nissan Maxima matching the provided description traveling north bound on Hemingway Avenue,” Murgo said in a release.
“As soon as officers got behind the vehicle, the operator pulled into a driveway on Hemingway Avenue, where all four occupants exited and fled on foot towards the Farm River Marsh.
“At this point, several Branford police officers arrived to assist, including Branford Police K9 Handler Sgt. Melissa Carney and her K9 partner Arrow,” Murgo said.
Carney and Arrow conducted a track in the marsh area and located Carpio and Despres. The two were detained by police while Carney continued her track with Arrow.
A short time later, Santiago and Souza were found hiding in the marsh. Carney ordered the two suspects out of the marsh and they were apprehended by Officer John Fraenza.
“Through the investigation, it was determined that the motorcycle being pushed down the street by the suspects had been stolen from a residence on Meadow Street,” Murgo said. “Other stolen items belonging to Meadow Street residents were also found in the Nissan Maxima after the occupants fled the vehicle.”
