Take a walk with the Historical Society

Both tours limited to 15 people, must wear mask and social distance

- Staff reports

WEST HAVEN — The West Haven Historical Society will sponsor two walking tours of the Savin Avenue and Church,

Court, and Chestnut street neighborhoods on Sept.

26, according to organizers.

The rain date is Oct. 3. The first tour is scheduled to depart the Historical Society, 686 Savin

Ave., at 10 a.m. and the afternoon tour will step off at 1:15 p.m., according to organizers.

Both tours will be limited to 15 people and each person must wear a mask and keep social distancing during the tour, organizers said.

The cost is $10 per person and includes a packet of historical pictures of many structures on the tour. Each tour will last approximately 90 minutes.

One of the historic sites on the tours will be the location of the Oak Hill Seminary for Young Women that stood on Church Street facing Savin Avenue, according to organizers. Founded in 1845, the school enrolled young ladies from local families and neighboring towns. The school continued in operation until 1870. Fire destroyed the building many years later.

Other sites included on the tours will be the Johnson farm on Church Street, the 18th century

Barr house on Court Street, and the “elegant” Iris Hill home located on Chestnut Street. The house, constructed around 1860, was the residence of Alexis Painter, son of

West Haven’s well-known Capt. Thomas Painter.

The tour will proceed a limited distance on each street and will return along Savin Avenue to the West Haven Green. Call Jon at 203-933-0081 to reserve a place on the morning or afternoon tour. Deadline is Sept. 23.
