School board member resigns due to move

- By Mark Zaretsky

EAST HAVEN — Board of Education member Elizabeth Esposito has resigned because she is in the process of moving to a neighborhood town, board Chairwoman Michele DeLucia confirmed.

“Liz told me a little over a week ago that should would need to resign since she was moving, and sent her letter on Friday stating she would resign effect

October 2,” DeLucia said.

Mayor

Joe Carfora will decide who will fill out Esposito’s term, DeLucia said. Esposito was elected to a twoyear term on Nov. 5, 2019. Her term lasts until November 2021.

“It is with some regret

that I am writing to inform you of my decision to resign my position on the Board of Education effective Oct. 2nd,” Esposito wrote in her resignation letter. “While we are in the process of selling our house in East Haven, I am no longer residing at the East Haven house so it would be in the best interest for all for me to resign.

“It’s been an experience to be part of the Board of Education and I wish you and the board much success,” Esposito wrote.”

DeLucia said she contacted Carfora’s administration to discuss the process after hearing about how Branford was filling its two vacancies — with the Board of Education choosing the successors — “but was quickly told it was the mayor’s choice before I even asked my question,” she said.

“So even though it’s the mayor’s choice, I like that the opinion of the BOE is valued in Branford,” DeLucia said.

She said she hasn’t been contacted by anyone in the mayor’s office since forwarding Esposito’s resignation on Friday.

Carfora said he “was informed formally the other day about Liz Esposito’s resignation from the Board of Education. Liz was a wonderful asset to our community,” he said. “I am sorry to see her go, but I wish her and Joe much health and happiness.

“With respect to her replacement, I have already received a number of recommendations and expect to receive even more,” Carfora wrote in an email. “I do not anticipate setting up a committee; however, all potential replacements will be vetted in a responsible, professional fashion prior to making my selection.”
