New free coronavirus test sites open
NEW HAVEN — Yale New Haven Health is adding COVID-19 testing sites in New Haven for asymptomatic patients.
All Yale-New Haven Health’s testing sites are run from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at no cost to the individual, nor do they have to show proof of insurance. All children and adults are welcome, and while an appointment is not necessary, they make the process go more quickly.
The sites include:
New Haven Green, at the corner of Temple and Elm streets, Sept. 29 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; Whalley Commons at 1471 Whalley Ave., Wednesday , Friday , Sept. 29 and Sept. 30; DeGale Field, corner of Goffe and County streets on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for a one-time session that coincides with the Bereavement Care Network’s 8th annual Peace Rally.
For persons who are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, the health group asks that they not come to the sites, but call their physician or call 833-ASKYNHH.

New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker said there has been a slight uptick in COVID-19 cases across the state, but they are still low in New Haven. He asked residents to continue to be vigilant and reminded them that Gov. Ned Lamont has told municipalities they can fine people for not wearing a mask or for organizing or attending large gatherings.
“We do not want to issue fines so please keep up the good work complying with the COVID guidance,” Elicker wrote.
Elicker also passed on some new guidance on mask wearing.
The mayor said new research advises persons not to wear neck gaiters, bandannas or masks with ventilators as they do not protect as well as cloth masks with two or more layers. Also, surgical masks are for one-use only and should be discarded after that; masks should be worn by people 2 years and older. They should not be worn by anyone younger than 2 or by people who have trouble breathing or who can’t remove it by themselves.
