UConn-ND series gets postponed

The UConn women’s basketball team’s game against Notre Dame in the 2020-21 season has been postponed due to Notre Dame’s need to restructure its schedule because of COVID-19, according to a release from UConn.

The Huskies and Fighting Irish were set to enter the first of a four-year series agreement this season in South Bend, Ind. With the postponement, the teams will add the game to the end of the series in 2024-25.

This will be the first time the rivals haven’t met during the regular season since 2013-14. Including postseason, the last time the teams did not face each other was 1994-95.

UConn holds a 38-13 all-time advantage in the series, including an 81-57 victory at Gampel Pavilion last December in the most recent meeting.

Coach Geno Auriemma said earlier this month that the Huskies’ marquee games against Notre Dame, Baylor, Tennessee and South Carolina were still on and that he hadn’t heard anything from those schools to suggest otherwise. However, as Monday’s update shows, scheduling remains a very complicated and fluid process amid the pandemic.

The NCAA is allowing teams to play up to 25 games or 23 plus one multi-team event. The Huskies are slated to compete in the Hall of Fame Challenge on Nov. 28-29 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville along with Quinnipiac, Mississippi State and Maine, and that remains on. They also expect to play 20 Big East games.

The Fighting Irish are entering their first season with Niele Ivey at the helm. Hall of Fame coach Muffet McGraw announced her retirement in April following 33 seasons and two national titles.
