Virtual Family Fun Walk to benefit nonprofits

- By Lisa Reisman

BRANFORD — Picnic along Chet’s Pond. Take family selfies at the Branford Labyrinth.

Enjoy the brisk air amid the foliage. And you can do it for a cause.

To benefit the Community Dining Room and the Orchard House Medical Adult Day Care Center, there will be a virtual one-mile Family Fun Walk along the Branford portion of the Shoreline Greenway Trail.

Participants can walk anytime between 6 a.m. Oct. 23 and 6 p.m. Oct. 25.

Since 1985, the not-forprofit CDR has committed itself “to serving the community by feeding the hungry and helping with other basic human needs,” as its website notes.

Orchard House, a nonprofit located on Shore Drive, has as its mission

“to keep seniors living at home for as long as possible by providing a day program for aging adults to feel safe, loved, and appreciated,” according to its website.

“COVID threw a wrench into both our traditional fundraising events so we saw this as a healthy and fun way to engage the communities we serve and provide more value to the donor than simply asking for donations,” said Ken Engelman, Orchard House Fund development director.

Engelman added that 2021 will be the 40th anniversary of the Orchard House and the 36th of the CDR.

“That’s a long time to have served Shoreline residents and their families,” he said.

“All donations will help us continue to do what we do for many years to come.”

To register, $ 25 per family/group of 4, visit familyfunwalk2020.eventbrite.com or email events@theorchardhouse.org.

Parking is at 48 Tabor Drive. Participants can submit selfies to JBarron@thecommunitydiningroom.org. Face coverings are recommended when around others.
