- By Ann Gamble

OLD SAYBROOK — George B. Maynard was a farmer, builder, 20-year owner of Saybrook Hardware and a family man.

He was known to be quick with a joke and for his commitment to the town he lived in all his life, always on Ingham Hill Road.

He was also a supportive partner to his wife of 73 years, former Old Saybrook First SelectwomanBarbara Maynard.

George Maynard died Nov. 17 with family by his side. He was 94.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three of his six siblings, three sons, four grandchildrenand seven great-grandchildren, with one more on the way.

Afriend of the Maynard’s, local historian and author Tedd Levy, shared his thoughts about Maynard’s life . “George Maynard was a farmer and family man, a builder of his own house, a businessman, bird watcher and hunter,” Levy said in an email. “He was a devoted reader of Louis L’Amour westerns and the ‘Lancaster Farming’ newspaper, a watcher of National Geographic programs, a collector of tools, and a lover of local lore.”

Maynard worked hard on behalf of his family and community, Levy said.

“As a young man on the farm he was up early and worked through the day, every day. He provided milk to the area dairies, bought cattle in the Midwest and sold beef locally,” Levy said.

Levy recalled that the Maynards were a jolly pair at

Christmas.

“In later years he and Barbara owned Saybrook Hardware. At Christmas, they

dressed as Santa and Mrs. Claus and welcomed children at a local bank,” Levy recalled.

This writer visited the

Maynards several times at the home George Maynard built in 1958, “from the ground up,”
