Police: New Haven man charged with robbery, assault
HAMDEN — A New Haven man was arrested after he allegedly stole power tools and ran from officers, police said.
Calvin Sherman, 50, of Orchard Street, is charged with robbery, burglary and assault, all in the third degree; fifth- degree larceny; interfering with an officer; engaging an officer in a pursuit and operating an unregistered motor vehicle, police said.
Capt. Ronald Smith said in an email that officers responded to Mix Avenue address for a reported fight in progress Dec. 18, and a dispatcher then told them that a victim had allegedly been assaulted as part of a robbery involving a weapon , with the suspect fleeing in an older Nissan.
“Shortly thereafter, Detective Mark Sheppard observed the vehicle traveling southbound on Dixwell Avenue. Officers attempted to conduct a motor vehicle stop, however, the operator, Calvin Sherman, failed to comply. Sherman subsequently struck a snowbank at the intersection of Goodyear Street and Read Street. He immediately fled on foot,” Smith said in the email. “Detective Sheppard and Officer Scott Jason apprehended Sherman in the vicinity of Huntington Street and Butler Street. He was in the possession of a knife.”
Smith said that “investigation revealed that while at Mix Avenue, Sherman illegally entered a storage unit and stole tools, valued at approximately $ 500.”
Sherman is scheduled to appear at Superior Court in Meriden Feb. 12, Smith said.
