Marin authors a stellar season

Every fall sports team knew the reality of the situation: the season could be paused, or canceled, at any time due to a COVID-19 positive case, forcing a two-week quarantine. A number of teams made it through without issue.

The Amity girls soccer team managed to get through 10 regular-season games. The players arrived at practice on Nov. 5 to get ready for its Southern Connecticu­t Conference first-round playoff game against Sheehan.

But the Spartans never got a chance to practice. Amity coach Owen Quigley broke the news that one of the players had tested positive for the COVID-19 virus. Everyone had to go into quarantine.

The season was over.

“It was a flip of a switch, an abrupt change. We ended up having a team zoom (meeting) to help everyone cope,” junior Audrey Marin said. “To be fair, we were pretty thankful for every single game, every single practice, but it was still disappoint­ing nonetheles­s.”

So there was no chance to win its region in the SCC, no chance to play Shelton, the eventual region champion, a third time.

But it was still a fine season for Marin, the Register’s Area MVP for the second straight season.

She finished with 13 goals and 13 assists in 10 games.

And it could have been plenty more.

“Audrey could have scored more than 20 goals if I had played her in all the game and kept her in games,” Quigley said.

Marin, 16, earned the SCC Division C Player of the Year. She had been the league’s overall Player of the Year as a freshman and a sophomore. She also earned AllNew England laurels this season.
