HAMDEN — A town man has died after being struck while crossing Dixwell

Avenue Thursday night, according to Hamden police.

Calvin Washington, 65, was struck while walking across the road near its intersection with Saint James Street just after 6 p.m., Capt. Ronald Smith said in an email.

After receiving treatment from firefighters on scene, he was transported to Yale New Haven Hospital for further care. He died shortly thereafter, Smith said Friday.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident, Smith said. The road was closed for nearly seven hours as police investigated the crash.

The vehicle that struck Washington was driven by a 38-year-old Middletown man, he said.
