Looking back at how UConn fared in Big East title games
The UConn women beat Marquette 73-39 on Monday night to win their 19th Big East Tournament title — and first since 2012. The Huskies spent the last seven seasons in the American Athletic Conference, where they went 139-0 in league play.
Here’s a look back at how the Huskies have fared in Big East championship games:
1989 (SOUTH ORANGE, N.J.): UCONN 84, PROVIDENCE 65
UConn captures its first Big East title in Geno Auriemma’s fourth season. Ironically, Auriemma, suspended because of a scheduling error, spends the game at the team hotel getting updates from his wife, Kathy.
1990 (STORRS): PROVIDENCE 82, UCONN 61
The Friars exact revenge on UConn, claiming their first Big East crown.
1991 (WASHINGTON, D.C.): UCONN 79, PROVIDENCE 74
Buoyed by Kerry Bascom (game-high 26 points) and tournament MVP Meghan Pattyson, the Huskies claim their second Big East championship in three years — and later make their first Final Four.
1992 (STORRS): MIAMI 56, UCONN 47
Miami spoils dreams of a repeat.
1994 (STORRS):
UCONN 77, SETON HALL 51
Junior Rebecca Lobo (17 points, nine rebounds) is named the tournament’s most outstanding player.
1995 (SOUTH ORANGE, N.J.): UCONN 85, SETON HALL 49
Along the way to their first unbeaten season and national championship, tournament MOP Kara Wolters and the Huskies roll past Seton Hall.
1996 (STORRS):
UCONN 71, NOTRE DAME 54
It’s the first of seven meetings between the Huskies and Fighting Irish in the conference final.
1997 (STORRS):
UCONN 86, NOTRE DAME 77
Senior Carla Berube scores 21 points, two off her career high.
1998 (PISCATAWAY, N.J.): UCONN 67, RUTGERS 58
Norwalk’s Rita Williams steps up big time with Nykesha Sales hurt. Williams has 50 points, 21 assists, 15 rebounds and 13 steals in UConn’s three tournament wins, while playing 116 minutes.
1999 (PISCATAWAY, N.J.): UCONN 96, NOTRE DAME 75
Svetlana Abrosimova pours in 25 points and Shea Ralph adds 19 points and 10 assists.
2000 (STORRS): UCONN 79, RUTGERS 59
The Huskies shoot a ridiculous 85% in the second half.
2001 (STORRS):
UCONN 78, NOTRE DAME 76
Sue Bird at the buzzer. Enough said.
2002 (PISCATAWAY, N.J.): UCONN 96, BOSTON COLLEGE 54
The Huskies capture their ninth straight Big East title behind 19 points from Asjha Jones.
2003 (PISCATAWAY, N.J.): VILLANOVA 52, UCONN 48
The longest winning streak in women’s basketball at the time ends at 70 games.

Ann Strother scores a game-high 20 points and tournament MOP Barbara Turner has 13.

The Scarlet Knights hand UConn its first — and only — conference loss of the season.

UCONN 60, WEST VIRGINIA 32
The Huskies collect their 72nd straight win and 16th Big East tournament championship.

This one goes to UConn, but Notre
Dame returns the favor at the Final Four in Indianapolis.

UCONN 63, NOTRE DAME 54
See above: 2011. Swap Indianapolis for Denver.
2013 (HARTFORD):

Notre Dame wins both regular-season meetings, and this one as well. But the Huskies upend the Fighting Irish in the national semifinals en route to their eighth NCAA title.
