Public can comment on PD accreditation
WEST HAVEN — The public is being invited to comment as the city Police Department undergoes an assessment as part of its state accreditation, according to a release.
Assessors from the Police Officers Standards and Training Council will be in the city April 5 to review the department’s policies and procedures as they relate to State Accreditation Standards.
A department being verified as meeting POST Council standards is part of a voluntary process to gain accreditation, according to the release, “a highly prized recognition of law enforcement professional excellence.”
Members of the community can offer comments as part of the on-site assessment, the release said. Comments can be mailed to
William Tanner, POSTC Accreditation Division, 285 Preston Ave., Meriden CT 06450, by telephone at 203427-2602, by fax at 203-2386643 or by email to Accreditation.Compliance@po.state.ct.us. (For email, senders are asked to put the name of the agency in the subject line of the email.)
Accreditation lasts for 3 years, at which time an agency can choose to be assessed for re-accreditation. According to the release, “The assessment team is composed of law enforcement practitioners from the Connecticut law enforcement community. The assessors will review written materials; interview individuals; and visit offices and other places where compliance can be witnessed.”
A copy of the State Accreditation Standards is available online at www.ct.gov/post.
