SHELTON — The Shelton Fire/Police Dispatch Center received a call for a basement fire on Green

Rock just before 11 a.m. on April 4.

Upon arrival, officials observed “significant” amounts of smoke coming from multiple areas of the home, including from the front door. At that point, the occupants of the home had exited without assistance.

Officials quickly stretched a hose line around the back of the house and department members entered the home through the walk-out basement door. The Shelton Fire Department reported that they had found “a large volume of fire in the mechanical room” located in the basement. The fire also spread to the ceiling of the basement, officials said.

Despite the ceiling of the basement catching fire, the flames were contained before spreading to the first or second floor of the home.

Approximately 30 firefighters, under the command of Assistant Chief Mike Plavcan, controlled the situation in roughly 20 minutes.

Along with multiple Shelton engine trucks aiding at the scene, the department was met with mutual aid from the Stratford Fire Department. Monroe, Derby and Nichols fire departments provided station coverage as crews worked the fire scene.

The department reported that no fire personnel were injured during operations, however, the homeowner suffered a “minor burn” to his hand when attempting to extinguish the fire.

Officials also reported that the home is not currently habitable, and the Shelton Fire Marshal is still working to determine what caused the fire.
