A longtime New Haven-based company is changing towns, relocating to an East Haven industrial park later this spring.

Electric motor repair business Schulz Electric, currently located at 30 Gando Drive in New Haven, is expected to move to 110 Commerce St. in the East Haven Industrial Park in May, according to an announcement from Mayor Joseph Carfora’s office.

“We are working hard to create relationships like this,” Carfora said in a statement. “This was truly a coordinated, and professional effort to bring an established and reputable company to our community.”

The East Haven property, which has 41,000 square feet of space, is undergoing renovations in preparation for the relocation. Carfora said the improvements Schulz is making to the property represents “a substantial investment.”

Raymond Baldwin Jr., East Haven’s chief administrative officer and economic development director, said 110 Commerce St. site was vacant prior to Schulz signing a longterm lease with property owner Thomas Hennessey.

“I think they were looking for a larger space, one that was more suitable for what they do,” said Baldwin.

Schulz officials were not immediately available for comment on the company’s relocation.

The company got a $400,000 loan from the Connecticut Development Authority in 2011 to add roughly 3,600 square feet to its Gando Drive location.

Schulz Electric employs 50 people and is a $15 million annual business. The company has been operating in Connecticut since 1927.
