NEW HAVEN — Police have identified a city man killed in a shooting Wednesday night.

Officers responded to Newhall Street between Division and Thompson streets around 8:18 p.m. for a ShotSpotter alert of gunfire, finding Trequon Lawrence, 27, who had been struck by gunfire, Officer Scott Shumway said in an email.

Lawrence was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Shumway said.

Shumway asked that any witnesses who have not yet spoken with the department contact the New Haven Police Department Investigative Services Division at 203-946-6304.

He said callers may remain anonymous or submit tips anonymously by calling 1-866-888-TIPS(8477), or texting “NHPD” plus your message to 274637 (CRIMES).

Mayor Justin Elicker shared his displeasure and grief in a statement late Wednesday, noting the ongoing violence in New Haven and the city’s efforts to address it.

“Gun violence in our country is very concerning,” Elicker said. “Today, I started my day at the funeral of a 14-year-old who was lost to gun violence and I’m ending my day at yet another scene of a fatal shooting. To say

I’m frustrated, would be an understatement.”

The teen Elicker referenced — identified by police last month as Tyshaun Hargrove — was fatally shot on Aug. 25 shortly before 11 p.m. Officers responding to 911 calls about a person shot in the area of Chatham Street between Rowe and

Ferry streets found the 14-year-old suffering from gunshot wounds. He was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The investigation into that shooting remains ongoing.

City officials have been working to address the rise in gun violence by expanding police walking beats, hiring street outreach and youth workers, relaunching a local shooting task force and opening a reentry center to help those reentering the community after prison, Elicker said last month.

“We’re implementing, and have been for months, the evidence based programs that are known to reduce gun violence,” Elicker said in his statement Wednesday night. “But, we need more help from the community. Sharing information anonymously with the police department — no matter how small — could be the tip that gets a shooter off the streets.”

Prior to Wednesday’s fatal shooting, Elicker spoke with business owners and patrons in the area of Grand Avenue about the recent Fair Haven homicide. He said the city also announced a community meeting on gun violence, set to be hosted by Elicker and Acting Police Chief Renee Dominguez at the FAME School at 6 p.m. Friday.

“Stopping this violence continues to be the number one priority of my administration,” Elicker said.

Lawrence was the 22nd homicide victim this year in New Haven and the third since this past Sunday.

Before this homicide, Alfreda Youmans, Jeffery Dotson, Jorge Osorio-Caballero, Marquis Winfrey, Joseph Mattei, Kevin Jiang, Angel Rodriguez, DwaneiaTurner, Alessia Mesquita, Jack Hopeton, Tashawn Brown, Mariyah Inthirath, Adrian Barwise, Miguel Ramos, Richard Whitaker Jr., Ciera Jones, Kevan Bonilla, Kevin Mills, Hargrove, Zaire Luciano and Luis Fernando Gonzalez-Sandoz were killed in the city to date in 2021.
