Auxiliary state police trooper dies at 74

- By Tara O'Neill

Connecticut State Police personnel are mourning the death of an auxiliary trooper whose funeral is planned for this week.

Auxiliary Trooper Robert R. Prouty died at his South Windsor home on Sept. 30, according to his obituary. He was 74.

Prouty was born in Hartford on April 25, 1947. Prouty grew up in Hartford and graduated from Hartford High School in 1965. He attended DeVry Technical Institute, where he studied electronics, his obituary said.

After retiring from a 50-year career in sales, Prouty worked in the archery department of a local Cabela’s retail store.

Prouty also served as an

auxiliary trooper for Connecticut for 50 years, serving as the auxiliary coordinator and firearms instructor, his obituary said.

Connecticut State Police said Prouty was “a mentor to all auxiliary troopers, demonstrating a true commitment to state troopers and the entire agency.” In 2009, Prouty was honored as Auxiliary Trooper of the Year.

The auxiliary troopers comprise an all-volunteer police force that provides help to troopers in the course of their duties, according to the state. Auxiliary troopers help with crash scene, traffic control, disaster relief and special detail support. Recruitment for auxiliary troopers was halted in 1988.

Beyond his police duties, Prouty kept busy by fixing things around his home and helping family and friends — “he never sat idle,” his obituary said. He liked freshwater fishing and archery. Prouty could also often be found tending to his yard alongside his wife, Virginia “Ginger”

Prouty (Adamcewicz).

“A kind, caring devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many, he will be dearly missed,” his obituary said.

Prouty is survived by his wife of 55 years, children, grandchildren and various friends and loved ones.

Calling hours are scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home in South Windsor. A memorial mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Francis of Assisi Church in South Windsor. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made in Prouty’s memory to the state police K-9 unit at 294 Colony St., Building 3 in Meriden.
