Richard passed away peacefully at the age of 81 at Yale New Haven Hospital on Friday, April 8, 2022, with his family by his side. He was born on April 9, 1940 in New Haven, CT and resided in Branford, CT for the majority of his life. Richard was the son of the late Axel and Astrid (Rylander) Montelius, and husband of the late Ina Montelius. He is survived by his daughter, Ellyn (Montelius) and husband Gary Lane, and his son, Michael and wife Liane (St Germain) Montelius. Richard has 4 grandchildren; Ashley and Megan Lane and Lukas and Ava Montelius. He is also survived by his brother Robert and wife Virginia Montelius, nieces, nephews and many other family and friends. Richard graduated from Eli Whitney Technical School in 1958 and was employed by the George C. Field Company out of Madison, CT. There, he was a master carpenter for over 35 years. After he retired, Richard continued to dabble in the profession he greatly enjoyed. His favorite projects were helping his son, also a carpenter like his father, build barns, and worked part-time with his friend Glenn installing garage doors. Richard was a 60 year member of Masons in Trumbull Lodge #22 serving as past master. He was also a member of Scottish Rite,

Menunkatuck Audubon Society, and the Pyramid Shriners. In addition, he was a longtime member of Tabor Lutheran Church and served on the Tabor Cemetery Association. Richard will be remembered fondly as someone who loved his family, taking car rides and of course all things food related; he was known to travel far and wide across the state to acquire specialty items and deliver them to his family and friends around him. Many were lucky enough to receive a classic Richard ‘bear hug’ accompanied by his joyous laugh. He will truly be missed. Donations in his memory can be made to Tabor Lutheran Church Memorial Fund. A memorial service will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.
