Frances B. Apfel, 95, of Stratford, beloved wife of the late Sanford Apfel, passed away peacefully on April 12, 2022. Born on December 11, 1926 in Bronx, NY, she was the daughter of the late Leopold and Natalie Baer.

Fran met and married her husband of 15 years, Sandy, in Long Beach, NY in 1948. Frances, an elementary school teacher worked briefly in Long Beach before moving to Gloversvil­le, NY where she had the first 2 of her 6 children. The family moved to Morningsid­e adding 3 more children then finally to Woodmont for #6. When Sandy passed away in 1964, Frances returned to teaching 1st grade in the Milford school system, which included Sea Breeze, Calf Pen Meadow, and Meadowside.

One of her passions was clipping news articles about her former students and mailing them along with a little note. She loved her students and kept in touch with many of them. In 1979, she was the recipient of “Mother of the Year”. Retiring in 1985, Frances had time to enjoy the theater seeing many plays as well as participat­ing in the many theater events orchestrat­ed by her Oronoque Village community. Fran resided in Oronoque Village from 1995 until 2019. She was a voracious reader, did all of the crossword puzzles in the newspaper, indulged each one of her 8 grandchild­ren, and had an infectious laugh to go with her great sense of humor. She also was a world traveler and a lover of bountiful buffets.

Frances is survived by her children, Charles (Linda) Apfel, Russell (Ellen) Apfel, Richard (Maria) Apfel, Lawrence (Audrey) Apfel, Stuart Apfel, and Paula (Robert) Pollack; grandchild­ren, Benjamin, Joshua, Sadie-Rose, Wesley, Rychelle, Woodrow, Sanford, and Steven; greatgrand­children, Penny, Bear, and one more on the way; brother, William (Lois) Baer; and many extended family, friends, and past students.

Family and friends are invited to gather on Monday, April 18, 2022 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Cody-White Funeral Home, 107 Broad Street, Milford, CT 06460. A Funeral Service will begin at 11:30 a.m. that day at the funeral home. Burial will follow at the Or Shalom Cemetery, 11 Farwell Street in West Haven.
