George D. Noewatne April 14, 2022

George D. Noewatne, a lifelong resident of Madison, passed away on April 14, at Yale New Haven Hospital, after a short illness and surrounded by his family. He was the husband of the late Eileen (Buckley) Noewatne for 50 years. George was born in Madison on August 27, 1930, son of the late George T. Noewatne and Nora (O’Halloran) Noewatne. He was the loving father of George D. Noewatne, Jr. of Clinton and his partner Rhonda Novak. He was the brother of the late Claire Boylan (Terance); and uncle to their children, Kathleen Boylan and Maureen Elman (Peter); and great-uncle to Melanie Abbott (Ellery Deprey). Mary Dodd and her family were very special friends.

Mr. Noewatne proudly served his country during the Korean War as an infantryman in the US Army’s Second Infantry Division. During his service, he was awarded the Purple Heart, Korean Service Medal with Three Bronze Stars, and the Combat Infantryman Badge. After his honorable discharge, he returned home to resume his career as a carpenter. In 1960, he started Madison Builders and was president until 1976, when he retired. Under his leadership, Madison Builders constructed numerous homes and buildings on the shoreline, including the Knob Hill and Kensington Acres developments.

In his retired years,

George enjoyed touring the country via motorcycle; he amassed more than 300,000 miles on BMW motorcycles. He also enjoyed managing real estate holdings, walking and bicycling tens of thousands of miles, being a board member of the Charlotte L. Evarts Memorial Archives, interacting with old and new friends, and his family. He was an active member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, the Disabled American Veterans, and was a charter member of the Madison Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2096.

A private graveside service will be held at the CT State Veteran’s Cemetery. A memorial service to celebrate his long and storied life will be announced at a later date.
