18-year-old city resident killed in shooting
NEW HAVEN — A city man was fatally shot late Monday night in New Haven, according to police.
Officers responded to a report of a person shot on South Genesee Street between East Ramsdell Street and Harper Avenue around 11:20 p.m., Officer Scott Shumway said in an email.
They found Anthony Strother, 18, wounded at the scene, Shumway said.
“American Medical Response transported the victim to Yale New Haven Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries,” said Shumway. “The Bureau of Identification responded to the scene and collected ballistic evidence. Detectives from the Major Crimes Unit are leading the investigation.”
On behalf of the department, Shumway asked any witnesses who have not yet spoken with the police to contact the New Haven Police Department Investigative Services Division at 203-946-6304.
Callers may remain anonymous or submit tips anonymously by calling 1-866-888-TIPS(8477), he said, or texting “NHPD” plus the message to 274637 (CRIMES).
Strother is the fourth homicide victim of the year in New Haven.
Last year, as of May 8, there had been nine homicides in the city, according to the latest statistics from police.
Before Strother’s death, Brian Faulks, Keiron Jones and Jorge Delgado had been killed this year in New Haven.
Justin Harmon, director of communications and marketing with the New
Haven Public Schools, said in an email that Strother previously attended Cooperative Arts and Humanities High School, then moved on to Riverside Academy before withdrawing at the beginning of the school year.
“We are reaching out to express our condolences to the family,” said Harmon. “We will provide counseling support to any students who knew him.”
