Oxford Republican prioritizes jobs, crime and low taxes

- By Dan Nowak

Republican David Labriola may be running unopposed this election cycle, but his focus is still the same as it was when he was first elected in 2002 — connecting with his constituents in Oxford, Naugatuck and Southbury.

“Even though I’m unopposed this year, I still get out to numerous events in my district,” said Labriola, the state representative for the 131st House District. “The work of constituent service is ongoing.”

One way Labriola tries to connect with residents is to get out his message on the issues.

“Among my priorities this election when it comes to the issues include supporting our small businesses, creating and retaining jobs, and reducing taxes,” Labriola said. “Getting tougher on violent criminals is important, while providing services for those suffering from substance abuse and mental health issues.”

Among the bills Labriola sponsored this year are an act related to tethering and sheltering dogs, as well as an act that creates more services — and repercussions — in the juvenile justice system. Both bills were bipartisan and signed by Gov. Ned Lamont.

Labriola served as an assistant Republican leader for the 2007–2010 legislative sessions and has served as Republican Whip since 2011. He serves on the Government Administration and Elections Committee, along with the Transportation and Judiciary committees.

Labriola was born in 1960 and is a native of Naugatuck. He graduated from Yale in 1982 and the University of Connecticut School of Law in 1985.

According to his bio on his state government website, Labriola operated a solo law practice in Naugatuck after he graduated. He served as a Naugatuck Police Commissioner from 1991 to 1993. In 1993, he and his brother, Attorney Gerald Labriola, Jr., formed the law firm of Labriola and Labriola, LLC in Naugatuck. David Labriola was also appointed to a two-year term as Naugatuck Borough attorney in 1995.

Labriola was the Naugatuck Republican Town Committee chairman from 1988-1991 and also served as vice-chairman of the Naugatuck Republican Town Committee from 1998-2002. He lives in Oxford with his wife, Joanna, and their children Alex and Kate. His son Nick is an attorney in North Carolina.

“As a veteran legislator in leadership (whip), I help craft our caucus platform, the Contract with Connecticut,” Labriola said. “Experience allows me to better navigate the legislative process, particularly in the area of criminal justice, which is also my area of expertise as an attorney in private practice.”
