Dr. Edwin Krieger
Dr. Edwin Krieger of Hamden, Connecticut, died on Monday, January 9, 2023, at the age of 97. He was born in New Haven, on March 3, 1925, to Abraham Krieger and Lee Lazaroff Krieger.
Edwin’s soft-spoken and gentle manner belied his dynamic intellect and abiding curiosity for the world of ideas. A life-long jazz enthusiast, he played both the piano and guitar and explored extensively the evolution of the form and its primary movements and innovators. He pursued in much the same manner the many scientific theories that emerged over his lifetime and was happy to discuss with any interested party the nuances of science and jazz. A born teacher and mentor, Edwin was most patient with the young people who engaged his intellect and challenged his proteges with probing questions, all the while remaining the humble inquirer himself. His pursuit of the life of the mind was matched by his zest for the outdoors. A consummate sailor and skier, he also enjoyed kayaking, hiking, and analyzing the performances of his beloved Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots.
Edwin began his education at the University of Connecticut, but interrupted his studies in 1943, when he enlisted in the Army. He served for two years in Europe, and as a member of the 104th Infantry division, marched north through
Italy. In recognition of his service on the continent, he was awarded three bronze service stars and a victory medal. He was only 19. After the war, he completed his degree and then attended the New England College of Optometry where he earned his O.D. Shortly thereafter, he began a decades-long career as a Connecticut-based optometrist, retiring in 1988.
Edwin is survived by the love of his life, Nina Freedman Kreiger, to whom he was married for 75 years. Over the course of their relationship, they created a warm and nurturing home for their two daughters, Jane and Amy, both of whom predeceased him. He was a beloved older brother to Joan Lazerow and Barbara Levine, both of whom likewise predeceased him. He is also survived by three grandsons, Ethan Frei, Sam Frei, and Oliver Alex, and a granddaughter, Maya Bergamasco; and by an extended family of nieces and nephews and cousins by whom he will be sorely missed.
Edwin’s joie de vivre touched all who were drawn into his sphere of influence. Donations in his memory can be made to Sleeping Giant State Park where he blazed and maintained the trails for many years.
