GIRLS HOCKEY TOP PERFORMERS
The CHSGHA girls ice hockey playoffs wrapped up with New Canaan defeating Stamford/Westhill/Staples 3-0 in the final for its ninth overall state championship. The tournament featured several close games, with three of four quarterfinals and one of two semifinals decided by one goal, and seven of 11 contests decided by two or fewer goals.
Here are the top performances in girls hockey from the CHSGHA tournament.
Avery Askew, Stamford/ Westhill/Staples: The sophomore defender scored the game-winning goal in a 3-2 double overtime victory against Mercy/Northwest Catholic/East Hampton in the quarterfinals.
Shannon Aube, Mercy/ Northwest Catholic/East Hampton: The senior scored four goals in a 7-0 victory over the Ridgefield co-op in the first round of the CHSGHA tournament. She added two assists in a 3-2 double overtime loss to the
SWS co-op in the quarterfinals.
Mia Avalos, Darien: The sophomore scored the only goal in the Blue Wave’s 1-0 victory over the Hamden co-op in the quarterfinals.
Macyn Callahan, New Canaan: The freshman goalie was named the MVP of the championship game after making 22 saves in a 3-0 shutout of Stamford/Westhill/Staples. It was her 14th shutout of the season. She made 64 saves and allowed just two goals in three state playoff games.
Lola Espirito-Santo, East Catholic co-op: The junior goalie collected 28 saves against 30 shots in a 2-1 overtime loss to New Canaan in the semifinals.
Maggie Lyden, Stamford/ Westhill/Staples: The freshman scored both SWS goals in a 2-0 victory over defending state champion Darien in the semifinals.
Serena O'Connor, New Canaan: The junior netted the game-winning goal in overtime to lead the Rams past the East Catholic co-op 2-1 in the semifinals.
Alivia Roy, East Catholic co-op: Ray, a sophomore, scored twice in the Storm’s 5-2 win over Southington/Avon in the quarterfinals.
Kyra Sweeney, Hamden co-op: The Hamden freshman collected 41 saves in a 1-0 loss to Darien in the state quarterfinals.
Lexie Tully, New Canaan: The senior had two goals and one assist in the semifinals and final. Her goal in the semis tied East Catholic with 1:24 remaining and she assisted on the games-winner in OT. She then scored the first goal in a 3-0 win over Stamford/Westhill/Staples in the final.
McCaffrey Tuttle, Stamford/Westhill/Staples: The freshman collected 25 saves for a shutout in a 2-0 victory over Darien in the semifinals.
