NEWFIELD, CHARLES J.
Charles John Newfield, the beloved husband of Edith Charlotte (Lewiski) Newfield, for 63 years, passed away on June 7, 2020 at 5:30 a.m. at Branford Hospice. He was born in Jamaica Queens and lived there the first 25 years of his life. For the past 10 years he resided in Branford, CT preceded by The Villages, FL 15 years; Buchanan, NY 29 years. Charles was predeceased by his sister Carol Theresa (Newfield) Gray (d 1990).
Charles is survived by his son: Dr. Charles Louis Newfield of Clinton and his wife, Carolyn J. (Reynolds) Newfield and three grandchildren who are triplets: Matthew, Luke and Tyler his daughter Catherine Ann (Newfield) Groover her husband, Ricky Groover of Santa Rosa Beach, FL and three grandchildren Joseph Richard Newfield of Hollywood, CA, Austin Groover of Tallahassee, FL, Sarah Catherine Newfield-Groover. Charles served in the US Army (1954-1956) as a radar fire control technician. He earned a Bachelors in Chemical Engineering from NYU and Masters in Chemical Engineering from Pratt Institute. He retired as an IBM Associate Semiconductor Engineer with twenty-six years of service. Charles was an avid boater and fisherman and dedicated his service to educating the public about boating safety and navigation with 51 consecutive year of meritorious service to the United States Power Squadron In addition he was an Emeritus Member of the USPS National Governing Board as well as having been a District 2 Commander. Over his lifetime he owned twelve boats that he kept on the Hudson River, Long Island Sound and the South Shore of Long Island.
Charles met his wife Edith (retired Chemistry teacher) while both were attending summer courses at NYU. Charles and Edith were lifelong Democrats who were active in the Democratic Party in The Villages, and they attended the 2000 Democratic National Convention in LA with Edith as Delegate and Charles as correspondent for The Daily Sun (Villages, FL).
Charles spent the latter years of his life attending his grandson’s ballgames, spending time with family and researching family ancestry.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 29, 2020 at 10:30 at St. John Bosco Parish in St. Mary Church, 731 Main Street, Branford. Burial will follow in St. Agnes Cemetery. This will be followed by a Celebration of Life Dinner at Donovan’s Reef, 1212 Main Street, Branford. Please RSVP for Celebration of Life Dinner to info@wsclancy.com.
