BATTIPAGLI­A, ERSILIA “ELSIE”

Elsie (Ersilia) Battipagli­a, wife of the late Louis Joseph Battipagli­a, passed quietly on February 23, 2021 at the St. Raphael’s campus of Yale New Haven Hospital, after a brief, non-covid related illness. She was the daughter of the late Enrico and Maria Carmina Proscino, and one of six siblings. Elsie was born and raised in the town of Hamden, where she lived her entire life of 97 years.Elsie worked for Whitney Blake Co., Hamden, Sargent Co., New Haven, and Etkind and Solkoff, Inc., Hamden. She was known fondly as “Mrs. B.” the lunch aid at Bear Path and Helen Street Schools, as a leader to Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts, and as chaperone on many school field trips. She volunteere­d at the Clelian Adult Day Care Center, attended Blessed Sacrament and St. Anne’s Churches, and was a member of the St. Anne’s Young at Heart Club. Elsie loved to travel, having visited Italy, the Grand Canyon, and Florida. She made beautiful afghans for family and friends and her eggplant parmigiana was her most requested dish. She loved dancing with her husband, playing cards, and the New York Yankees. Elsie leaves four children, Louis (Pamela) Battipagli­a of Durham, Annette Balcastro of Cheshire, James Battipagli­a of Southingto­n, and Joanne Battipagli­a of Hamden, as well as three grandsons, Daniel, James and Raymond, her beloved cousin Concetta “Tina” Onofrio and family, and many nieces and nephews and friends. She is predecease­d by her sister, Antoinette “Toni” Arnone, and brothers Michael, Mario, Ralph, and Albert Proscino. A graveside service will be private. Born in New Haven, CT in 1948, Kathleen ‘Kathy’ Garthwaite, died at the age of 72, where she chose to retire, in Jensen Beach FL.

Kathy was predecease­d by her parents Jerry and Mary McMahon and her brother Bobby. Kathy has survived by her three sons David Serfass, Pete and Bud Garthwaite, and her three grandchild­ren Breanna, Bodhi, and Silas.

Kathy worked for the Connecticu­t Rail Road and then as a court reporter in Middletown, CT. After retiring to Florida, she was able to enjoy her love for the beach and use her unique, inventive, and artistic mind to open her own store of handmade creations. Kathy’s greatest attribute was her ability to make everyone laugh with her outrageous, creative, and sharp wit. Spending time with Kathy would surely lead to an adventure, be it great or small.

Paula A. Civitello Purificato, of Cheshire, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 24, 2021 at MidState Medical Center, Meriden. She was the beloved wife of Michael I. Purificato. Paula was born in New Haven on July 13, 1931 and was the daughter of the late Paul and Elizabeth D’Amato Civitello. Mother of Diane Purificato and Michael (Deirdre) Purificato. Grandmothe­r of Jennifer, Samantha, and Marissa. Great-grandmothe­r of Ben and Rory. Loving aunt of Frances Festa.

Theodore T. Tamulevich, 96, of North Branford, died February 12, 2021 of complicati­ons due to congestive heart failure. He was predecease­d by his wife, Mary Noonan Tamulevich, and parents, Valentine and Anastasia Tamulevich. Ted is survived by his son, Theodore Tamson of North Branford, formerly of New York City, as well as his brother, Valentine Tamulevich of Branford, numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

Born October 28, 1924 in Branford, CT, Ted attended Branford schools before graduating from the former Arnold College, University of Bridgeport. After proudly serving three years in the Army, European Theatre, during World War II, he was employed by the state of Connecticu­t, Division of Bridges, for 33 years.

A kind and caring man, Ted was always ready with a joke and a smile, saying “I love to see people laugh.” He will be greatly missed by the many people whose lives he touched.
