Nancy Conlan
February 11, 2022
Nancy Joy (Augustine) Conlan of Hamden, Connecticut passed away peacefully on February 11, 2022 in New Milford with her daughter by her side after a courageous, three-decade battle with Parkinson’s disease. A loving mother, sister, daughter, and friend, she was a kind and gentle soul who always made others feel special.
Born in New Haven on January 8, 1947 to the late Barbara (Wood) and Joseph Augustine, Nancy graduated from West Haven High School in 1965, and earned her Associate’s Degree from Gateway Community College. A child of deaf adults (CODA), Nancy was a loving daughter who bridged the gap between the deaf and hearing worlds for her parents, and turned her experience with the deaf community into a career as a sign language interpreter for the State of Connecticut, a position she held until her retirement. Also a breast cancer survivor, Nancy never let her health challenges define who she was. She never complained and remained determined to carry on with quiet grace.
Nancy is survived by her daughter Aimee (Conlan) Altemus, her husband
James, and granddaughters Emma and Lily, of New Milford. She is also survived by her brother Gary, his wife Pattathorn Kosayothin Augustine, and his daughters Danielle and Kristen. She was preceded in death by her long-time partner, Richard McManus, in 2016.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on March 26th at 1pm at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 7 Whittlesey Ave., New Milford, Connecticut. Interment will be at a future date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Parkinson’s Foundation (https://www.parkinson. org/). The family would like to thank the Apple Blossom staff at Candlewood Valley Health and Rehabilitation Center for their wonderful care of Nancy during the last year of her life.
