Dr. Royal J. Gay, III
April 6, 2022
Dr. Royal J. Gay passed away Wednesday, April 6, 2022 at his home on the shore in Branford, CT at 79 years old. He is survived by his wife of 54 years Margaret A. (Gervais) Gay. Roy was born Feb. 16, 1943 in New Britain, CT – son of the late Robert H. Gay and Nancy Gay (Webb) where he grew up and attended St. Thomas Aquinas High School (class of ‘61). He completed his undergraduate work at Trinity College, Hartford, CT (class of ‘65) and attended the Yale School of Medicine, Yale University, New Haven, CT (class of ‘69).
Newly married and for his Residency and Fellowships in Internal Medicine and Cardiology, he and Maggie moved to the area near Albany Medical Center in Albany, NY, soon settling and raising their family in Loudonville. With partners, Dr.s Filipone, Formel and Grubs he created Capital Cardiology Associates of Albany, NY in 1974 - serving patients at hospitals in the Albany area as an attending physician in Internal Medicine and Fellow of the American College of Cardiology. As well as his considerable dedication to his family and patients, mentees and colleagues in medicine – Roy loved the ocean, sailing and his community in the Branford shoreline area, having spent summers on the waters of Long Island Sound with his family from his own childhood until his retirement in 2016, when he was lucky enough to make the area his permanent home. He was quiet and funny, never bragged about his own accomplishments, was a voracious reader of whatever sparked his interest in fiction, from history to science to math to pop culture, and enjoyed observing the world and simply figuring out how things worked and why. His favorite places were at the helm of his sailboat and by the fire with a book surrounded by his bustling family.
He is survived by his wife, children and grandchildren: Michael Gay and his wife Kanita, Matthew Gay and his wife Sarah, and Megan Gay; his siblings, Anita Winkler (Gay), Dr. Robert Gay, and Dr. Roger Gay.
Relatives and friends are invited to a visitation at the W. S.
