Jane C. Harris
April 8, 2022
Friday, April 8, 2022, Jane C Harris, the loving wife of the late David W. Harris and beloved mother of David and Nancy, died April 8th. She died in her cherished home which was one of her greatest wishes. Jane was sharp as a tack until last week when she took a bad fall.
Jane was born and raised in the Flatbush area of Brooklyn, New York. Jane received her degree in Art History from Pembroke College at Brown University. She apprenticed with designer Lester Beale and was on staff at Esquire and Harpers Bazaar magazines as a commercial artist in New York City.
She put her art career on hold when she met and married David, the love of her life. They brought three children into this world: Jean, Nancy and David. They tragically lost Jean to a rare blood disorder at age 15.
While raising the kids, Jane dabbled in her artwork. By the time she moved to Madison Connecticut, 45 years ago, she jumped in with both feet. She was a founding member of City Gallery in New Haven where she had many gallery presentations into her 97th year. She experimented with many art forms and developed fantastic artist friendships over the years. Many of her close art friends assisted in enabling her to continue her artwork until her last weeks of life.
A voracious reader, she loved the written word. A book in hand always, she often read the same one many times for the joy of it. She was an expert scrabble player. Anyone who beat her felt a sense of accomplishment. She worked the New York Times crossword puzzle every day. She loved movies as well.
She leaves her two children; Nancy Harris and David Harris, (Kathy), two grandchildren, Sarah Humbargar, (Cody), and Leah Harris, as well as one great grandchild, Clark Humbargar, and a second great grandson due any day. Jane will be immensely missed by all who knew and loved her.
A Memorial celebration will be held at a later date this summer. In lieu of flowers, a tribute can be made to either VNA Hospice, 753 Boston Post Rd, Guilford, CT 06437; https://connecticuthomecare.org/ or The Connecticut Hospice, 100 Double Beach Rd, Branford, CT 06405; https://www.hospice.com/ Arrangements in care of the Guilford Funeral Home, 115 Church St, Guilford.
