Shelton manages to edge Lyman Hall

- By Pete Paguaga

WALLINGFORD — It was a weird game where neither team scored on a hit.

Shelton scored on a fielder’s choice, a dropped third strike and a bases loaded walk, while Lyman Hall scored on an error and a sacrifice fly. The two teams combined for eight hits and four errors.

The timely runs scored combined with a complete game performance by Roy Lenhard was enough for Shelton in a 3-2 win over Lyman Hall at Pat Wall Field on Saturday afternoon.

“An ugly win is better than an ugly loss,” Shelton coach Scott Gura said.

Gura said that his team has been in games like this before, despite the team’s 3-2 record, they have allowed just one earned run this year.

Lenhard worked ahead in the count and kept batters off balance all game.

“Always first pitch strikes and then you can break out some splitters,” Lenhard said. “You want to get that first pitch strike so you can get to those pitches.”

Lenhard kept Lyman Hall off the board for the first six innings, before the Trojans were able to break through in the seventh.

“It wasn’t until later in the game where his pitch count got up there to where we started to have some better at bats against him,” Lyman Hall coach Bill Rich said.

PLAYER OF THE GAME Roy Lenhard, Shelton:

The senior lefty pitched a complete game for the Gaels. He worked ahead against every batter, throwing just 84 pitches to get through the game.

QUOTABLE

“We got lucky and it’s good to be on the lucky side when you win compared to the bad luck side,” Guru said.
