Alfred Emanuel Shanley, 93, of Guilford, formerly of Hamden, beloved husband of 61 years to the late Anne E. Mrovec Shanley, passed away peacefully on June 9, 2022 in CT Hospice. He was born in Bridgeport on June 29, 1928, son of the late M. Vincent and Helen Neville Shanley. He is survived by his children Msgr. James A. Shanley of Bloomfield, Daniel J. Shanley (Kay) of Guilford, Jane A. Shanley (Paula Arruda) of Barrington, RI, Mary E. Shanley of Norwalk, and Michael J. Shanley (Daniel Kukielka) of Boca Raton, FL; granddaughter Kerby DeJesus (Luis) and great-granddaughter Kaylee Rae DeJesus of Charlotte, NC. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Pat Shanley of Milford, many nieces and nephews, and close friends in Guilford and Leetes Island. Al was preceded in death by his sisters Margaret Shanley, Elizabeth Harvey, Anne Glancy; brother John Shanley; and his niece Kathleen Glancy, who held a very special place in his heart. After graduating from College of the Holy Cross, he and Anne were married in 1951 just before he left to serve in the Army during the Korean War. They raised their children throughout Connecticut while Al spent his career with Blue Cross & Blue Shield. Making fast friends wherever life found him, Al approached everything and everyone with interest, care and enthusiasm. He loved spending his winters in Florida playing golf, watching boats on the water, browsing consignment stores and spending time with dear friends and family. Without hesitation, Al likely offered to wax your car, refinish a piece of furniture, give you an idea for a project or start one for you on his own. Undoubtedly, he invited you to join him for a libation at four o’clock, known as Johnnie Time. He will be immeasurably missed, but forever remembered for a life well lived, his contagious laughter, uncanny wit, generosity of spirit and the ever-present twinkle in his eye - especially when a classic car was near. As we recount his stories and quips, our laughter will be his legacy as we raise a glass and repeat after him: “what a day this has been.” The Shanley Family wishes to express our profound gratitude to the nurses and staff of Connecticut Hospice for their respectful care and compassion.

Family and friends are invited to go DIRECTLY to St. George Church, 33 Whitfield St., Guilford, TUESDAY morning to celebrate A Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00.
