Elizabeth Bert

-

Elizabeth (Stokes) Bert, 92, was born on November 23, 1930, in Dumas, Arkansas. She was the second oldest daughter of the late Charlie Stokes and Bertha L. Burton Stokes. Her parents were hard-working sharecroppers. An earnest love for God was instilled in the Stokes children at an early age, principles that followed Elizabeth throughout her entire life. She was a faithful, dutiful, active member of the Church of God in Christ for over 70 years. In fact, she was currently the longest standing member of The New Trinity Temple Church of God in Christ.

Elizabeth was educated in the Dumas Public School system. In 1946, at the age of 16, she relocated to Connecticut. On October 29, 1950, Walter Bert wed Elizabeth; and they became the proud parents of Walter, Jr., and Deborah Louise. The Walter-Elizabeth marriage was loving and beautiful and lasted over 65 years until Walter’s passing.

Elizabeth’s personality, genuine love, care, and generosity made her everybody’s mother, everybody’s confidante, auntie, and trusted friend. Elizabeth’s busy schedule included employment at Winchester, where her co-workers were happy to witness her culinary gifts, because Liz frequently shared numerous home-made treats and goodies, as she lovingly did with family and friends.

Elizabeth Bert was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Walter Bert, Sr.; two sisters and four brothers, Bernice Salters, Effie Dunlap, Charlie Stokes, Jr., David, Robert, and Vernell Stokes.

Elizabeth is survived by her children, Walter Bert, Jr., and Deborah Bert; one sister, Mother Bertha L. Stokes Holden of New Haven; two brothers, Wardell Stokes of New Mexico; and Vernon Stokes of New Haven; and several nieces, nephews, grandchildren, in-laws, cousins, Church family, and friends.

Elizabeth passed away on Friday, January 13, 2023.

A celebration of her life will take place Tuesday, January 24, 2023 at 11:00 AM at The New Trinity Temple COGIC, 285 Dixwell Ave., New Haven, CT 06511. Friends may call Tuesday at the church from 10:00 – 11:00 AM. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery, New Haven. Services by Howard K. Hill Funeral Services, 1287 Chapel St., New Haven, CT 06511.
