Dodger Dean
State Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos and his Republican crew are trying to shaft New York City while offering justifications that don’t pass the laugh test. Herewith the truths and falsehoods: n Gov. Cuomo wants to freeze the local share of Medicaid costs. Skelos would accelerate the phaseout for every county across the state — except for the five boroughs, where it would be slowed down.
Falsehood: The suburbs deserve more relief because they must live with a 2% property tax cap.
Truth: Skelos wants the city to foot the bill for breaks for his Long Island political base. n Skelos and the Senate want to compel the city — and only the city — to provide bus transportation for nonpublic students until 5 p.m., a mandate that would cost millions and mainly benefit a couple dozen yeshivas in Brooklyn and Queens.
Falsehood: Busing would prevent a tragedy like the murder of Lieby Kletzky, a Brooklyn 8year-old abducted as he walked home from camp.
Truth: This is a favor for community leaders who backed the GOP candidate in a Senate race. n Mayor Bloomberg and Cuomo would transfer young offenders out of costly, abuse-ridden staterun facilities upstate and put them into less expensive city custody. Skelos is balking.
Falsehood: Some of these teenagers may be too much for the city to handle.
Truth: The Senate is kowtowing to labor unions and politicians who are focused on preserving jobs in upstate communities.
Enough with the cynical games, Sen. Skelos.
