THE DAY AT THE RACES

- BY JERRY BOSSERT

Went the Day Well went from a maiden winner to a possible Kentucky Derby starter after taking Saturday’s $500,000 Spiral Stakes at Turfway Park.

The 3-year-old colt is owned by Team Valor Stables and trained by

Graham Motion, the same connections who won last year’s Kentucky Derby with Animal Kingdom, who also won last year’s Spiral Stakes in his final start before the Derby. He was also ridden by John

Velazquez, who won the Derby on Animal Kingdom.

The colt could possible start next in the April 21 Lexington Stakes at Keeneland before a decision is made on the May 5 Derby.

Meanwhile, Kentucky Derby favorite Union Rags put in his final workout for Saturday’s Florida Derby, breezing four furlongs in :49.10 at the Palm Meadows Training Center.

“He did it the right way,” trainer

Michael Matz said.

Union Rags easily won the Feb. 26 Fountain of Youth Stakes by four lengths in his first start this year.

“I think he should take a step forward from that,” Matz said. “It didn’t look like he had to give everything he had. I would hope that having a race under his belt would help him for the Florida Derby.”

At the Churchill Downs Training Center, Gotham winner Hansen breezed five furlongs in 1:01.20 as he prepares for his next start in the April 14 Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland.

Also at the Palm Meadows Training Center, Withers Stakes winner Alpha breezed five furlongs in 1:00.99 as he prepares for a start in the April 7 Wood Memorial at Aqueduct.

nthe $800,000 Sunland Derby will be run at 7:45 Sunday evening featuring the Bob Baffert- trained

Castaway, who won last month’s Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park. The race also features El Camino Real Derby winner Daddy Nose Best and the Todd Pletcher-trained

Ender Knievel, who attracts John Velazquez to ride him at the New Mexico track. My selections are Daddy Nose Best, Stirred Up and Castaway.
