3 THINGS YOU DON’T WANT TO MISS

-

Sunday, 10:30 p.m. (Ch. 13) Chris Isaak: Beyond the Sun Isaak stopped aiming for the pop mainstream a while ago, and though it wasn’t a decision that made him a lot of money, it has enriched music fans’ lives. He now plays a lot of what might be called modern rockabilly, and he does it with taste and flair. So it’s a natural for him to salute Sun Records, home of Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison and a whole lot of other folks who walked the rockabilly roads even if that’s not all they played. Thursday, midnight (TCM) “Rebel Without a Cause” This is one of those 1950s movies where even if you don’t remember the film, the title affected the way you looked at popular culture. The ’50s ushered in the restless American — or rather, the American who was restless for a new set of reasons in a seeming land of plenty. Bonus: No movie may ever have had three more star-crossed lead performers than James Dean (above), Sal Mineo and Natalie Wood. All three died young and for no good reason. But they did leave us this enduring piece of celluloid. Saturday, 4:30 p.m. (Ch. 4) The Belmont Stakes Even if you don’t watch any horse race all year, you need to watch this one. Thirty-nine years to the day after Secretariat won the Triple Crown, I’ll Have Another (above) has a shot at winning, well, another one. He isn’t one of those magical horses, but if he wins he will become one.
