Osi, the SNY gang, Jack Curran and Bobby V ...

-

I don’ t know where Osi Umenyiora is going to be in 2013, but I sure am glad that he’s going to be lining up for the Giants when they try to make it two Super Bowls in a row.

For the last time, to my good buddy, Coach Torts:

I’ve been doing what I do a lot longer than he’s been doing what he does.

And I’ve heard a lot more dumb answers from guys who do what he does than he will ever hear dumb questions. That’s it and that’s all. Rajon Rondo, going for 44 points and 10 assists and eight rebounds against the Heat in Game 2 and having his team still lose the game that was like the 53-minute, NBA version of Endy Chavez’s catch.

You can’t do a better broadcast than Gary Cohen, Ron Darling, Keith Hernandez did Friday night.

They were all at their best, starting with Darling, a former pitcher and a former Met, who not only understood the emotions of Johan Santana, but the emotions of everybody listening to the sound of his voice.

And I was right there with Cohen when it was over, wanting to hear the replay of what Howie Rose said after strike three to Freese.

There are never any medals for trying in sports, but you tell me who watched the Celtics begin this NBA season on Christmas Day against the Knicks and saw them making it to the NBA’s Final Four.

Coming into this weekend, and before the baseball summer officially begins, we had 19 teams in the big leagues with records of .500 or better. This turned out to be a very good week, the middle of this week, for me to call up the great Jack Curran and ask him about a former shortstop of his named Mike Baxter.

Let’s just say I wasn’t dying of heartbreak myself when that missed call by the third-base umpire cost Beltran a hit in the top of the sixth. Lucas Duda, he can stay, right? You think we will ever get the honest story about who actually pushed the button on Alex Rodriguez’s $300 million contract extension?

Because I have always thought it was ridiculous to believe that Hank Steinbrenner acted alone. And by the way? I know it’s a long season, I know how fast the narrative changes, but when Alex Rodriguez goes into a game like Friday night’s with the second lowest slugging percentage in the batting order — like, we’re not supposed to talk about something like that? Now Bobby Valentine is winning games with an outfield of Daniel Nava, Scott Podsednik, Ryan Sweeney, with Nick Punto playing second and hitting a buck-fifty, and with Alfredo Aceves closing games about four times a week.

Just because Serena Williams lost in the first round of the French Open doesn’t mean she is officially in decline now.

But if she is in decline, if she doesn’t come back big at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open now that she is past 30, then this officially becomes the worst time in the history of American tennis.

Men’s tennis, women’s tennis, the whole ballgame.

Women’s tennis without Serena and Venus makes professional bowling look like a rock concert in comparison. I’m not quite clear, am I supposed to organize a protest rally because an umpire was mean to Russell Martin in Anaheim?

Speaking of Anaheim: I wasn’t counting out Mike Scioscia when his team was 10 games behind the Rangers in April and I’m sure not going to count Scioscia and the Angels out now.

You know when I am going to get tired of watching Mike Baxter go crashing into the left-field wall at Citi Field?

Never is when I’m going to get tired of watching that.

“The Mike Lupica Show is heard Monday through Friday at noon on ESPN 98.7 FM and 1050 AM.
